I have celebrated Valentine’s Day ever since I was a little girl. I remember in elementary school during class we had to get a valentine’s card and or candy for all the other children in the class. We would exchange and pass our cards/candy out and in return I would come home with sweet notes and some yummy candy. I never really understood the meaning of this special day when I was younger. To me it meant free candy! Once I got a note from a boy in class I had a crush on. It said in pretty pink letters, “will you be my valentine?” I was so excited, it was the best day of my life, until the girl next to me got the same exact note. I was upset but the candy made up for it.
The worst Valentine’s Day present I have received was from a guy in highschool who I dated for like a week. He got me chocolates but instead of giving them to me at school he decided to put them in my mailbox later at night when it was pouring rain outside. It didn’t go as planned because then I had to run outside and get the soaking wet chocolates, which I immediately threw in the trash. I wished he had given them to me at school so I looked loved like all the other students. But instead he had to wait until the last minute while it was raining. As a result of the incident, I broke up with him. I have honestly had a lot of interesting Valentine’s Days now that I think about it. However, the very best and most awesome Valentine’s Day I have had was this year. My boyfriend and I have been in a long distance relationship for almost 2 years now. Both years we have celebrated Valentine’s Day in separate states so it hasn’t been the greatest. This year however he made up for the distance and sent me a wonderful care package which consisted of lovely Kate Spade earrings and my favorite candy Skittles! Although we didn’t get to go on a romantic date night and watch chick flicks and cuddle under the stars, like some people did, overall I still had a pretty satisfying Valentine’s Day.
If I ever receive a gift I don’t like for Valentine’s Day I try my best not to make the person feel bad. This is hard because most people can tell I don’t like something by my facial expressions. The highschool boyfriend could probably tell I didn’t like the gift since our relationship didn’t last. Sometimes if the gift sucks you just got to tell yourself it’s the thought that counts.
From a public relations standpoint Valentine’s Day has a lot to do with advertising and social media. If I worked for a greeting card company, florist or chocolate manufacturer I would persuade the public to buy from me by offering special deals and coupons. I would tweet, post Facebook statuses, maybe make a YouTube video showing off the beautiful arrangement of things I have to offer. I would post pictures to the social media sites as well. In my opinion seeing something that looks good makes me want to buy it, especially if it is offered at a great price.
